YA Indie Carnival – Nastiness in YA Books

There are lots of great evil characters in YA books. I like to think mine are no exception. This week we here at the carnival have been asked to choose the nastiest, baddest, most sinister character we’ve ever written.

This is a tough one. SO TOUGH. I have a stable of wicked and wonderful antagonists, all of whom give me goosebumps, especially when I’m writing them. BUT if I have to choose (I guess I have to…) I’d pick:

Find them on Amazon.com

Dr. Kirstin Lund from The Hunted series.

A petite brunette with a love of pigtails, roller derby t-shirts and clapping her hands in girlish glee when she gets what she wants, this sociopathic madwoman is the brains behind the entire Hunter operation. When she’s not delighting in the efficient killers she’s created, slaughtering innocent kids to test her pet’s abilities, she’s plotting world domination, planning to crush everyone of authority under her tiny electric blue fingernail.

Shudder.

But the all time, most horrid, evil, terrible, wretched character in the history of wretched characters in YA books, the Queen of Nasty, can only be:

Dolores Umbridge from Harry Potter.

I don’t know why I despise her so. She’s just a character, I know that intellectually. But the woman has given me the creeps (and continues to) from day one. Every time I read the series, I alternate between flinching like a wimp and wanting to throw the book across the room to see if that will shake her loose and save Harry.

No such luck.

Okay! So there you have it… don’t forget to hop over to our webpage and check out not only what’s new this week but what my fellow carnies have to say about their own nasty pieces of work.

Happy Friday!

  1. Dr. Lund is definitely a creepy piece of work, and I actively hated Umbridge.

I don’t write YA, but my favorite nasty character I’ve created I’d have to say the unnamed man in “Wickedly Smooth”. I have no idea from whence he came but he freaks me out. And Anansi, from AP. Love writing him because he’s soooo…NASTY. Heh.

    • OMG NETTA did you have to remind me about Wickedly Smooth? DID YOU? Nightmares, coming up… you have some seriously creepy shit living in your head, woman. Shudder. I may have to change the above post…

  2. Oh yes, Dr. Lund definitely sounds creepy!

    • She’s just so… sweet. Until she throws a temper tantrum and has you killed…

  3. Doc Kirstin sounds even WORSE than Dolores Umbridge, Patti! It sounds like you’ve created a real monster there!!
