I do a number of speaking engagements per month in schools and with the public, and one of the main questions I’m asked is: where did the idea for Family Magic come from? And, more specifically, why that title?

When I first met Sydlynn Thaddea Hayle (I’m giggling as I write her full name because she hates it), I’d just finished reading the Harry Potter series by JK Rowling and realized what I was missing when it came to my writing. I was raised on hard-core science fiction and fantasy, but my true love was young adult paranormal.

Who knew? Only after I connected with Harry and Hermione and Ron did I understand I’d been missing the secret.

Syd came to me in the middle of the night, demanded I pay attention—finally—and go write down her details. As bossy as she is, I can’t begin to tell you how grateful I am I listened. Dragged my butt out of bed at 2:30 in the morning and wrote down the following:

My mom’s a witch, my dad’s a demon and I want to be ordinary.

From that moment, and in the years since, Syd has dominated my writing life. With twenty books in her series, beginning with Family Magic, as well as a number of spin offs, singles from other voices in her world, and an ever-expanding list of stories to be told, the Hayle Universe has become a second home to me.

So why Family Magic? While the book is fantasy, based on the paranormal, it’s also set in the life of a sixteen-year-old girl who just wants to fit in at school despite her abilities. To get along with her mother like every other teenager, even though Miriam Hayle is the leader of her coven and a powerful witch. To be a good role model for her little sister, half demon like herself, but with the physical traits to show it. All while balancing love, bullies, a vampire uncle with a boyish smile, a demon cat with a smart mouth, soccer, meddling witches who want to know everything and an evil force trying to destroy her coven.

For Syd, the paranormal is normal, sometimes more so than the craziness of being a teenager. And family is everything, even if she doesn’t want to admit it at first. To her, every family is magical.

About Family Magic

Family Magic by Patti LarsenHer mom’s a witch.
Her dad’s a demon.
And she just wants to be ordinary.

I batted at the curl of smoke drifting off the tip of my candle and tried not to sneeze. My heavy velvet cloak fell in oppressive, suffocating folds in the closed space of the ceremony chamber, the cowl trapping the annoying bits of puff I missed. I hated the way my eyes burned and teared, an almost constant distraction. Not that I didn’t welcome the distraction, to be honest. Anything to take my mind from what went on around me.

Being part of a demon raising is way less exciting than it sounds.

Sydlynn Hayle’s life couldn’t be more complicated. Trying to please her coven, starting over in a new town, and fending off a bully cheerleader who hates her are just the beginning of her troubles. What to do when delicious football hero Brad Peters–boyfriend of her cheer nemesis–shows interest? If only the darkly yummy witch, Quaid Moromond, didn’t make it so difficult for her to focus on fitting in with the normal kids. Add to that her crazy grandmother’s constant escapes driving her family to the brink and Syd’s between a rock and a coven site. Forced to take on power she doesn’t want to protect a coven who blames her for everything, only she can save her family’s magic.

If her family’s distrust doesn’t destroy her first.
